What is "Modes of Access"?¶

Modes of Access is a digital residency format about who can reach things—whether that's information, spaces, or tools. It's a technical question in computing, but more importantly, it's a political question in society: Who gets in? Under what conditions? Who makes the rules? It is a cooperation between Foundation Künstlerdorf Schöppingen and Kaethe:k Arthouse

The Core Principle¶

Instead of asking "Why can't this person participate?" we ask "How can we build systems so more people can participate?" Access isn't just a legal checkbox—it's a shared responsibility.

Key Ideas¶

Disability Justice:

• Disability isn't a personal problem —it's about systems that treat one way of living as "normal" and exclude others
• Access is everyone's responsibility, not just accommodation for exceptions

Crip Time:

• Disabled and chronically ill people experience time differently
• Energy levels vary. Rest is part of work, not time away from it
• A program should have flexible rhythms, not expect everyone to work at the same pace

Access as multiplication, not standardization:

• Instead of one "right way" to participate, there should be many ways
• More options = more people included

The Digital Residency Program¶

The Künstler*dorf and kaethe:k Kunsthaus are offering four remote residencies for artists whose work explores access, power, and participation in digital spaces.

The digital format removes travel barriers—they work from home. It's designed specifically to include people who are shut out of traditional in-person residencies.

What's expected: Artists should explore how digital spaces can be more accessible and inclusive, not less.

What is kaethe:k Kunsthaus?¶

kaethe:k Kunsthaus is an arts organization that does two things at once: they support artists to work, and they make sure the systems around art become more accessible and inclusive.

They work to make disabled artists more visible and more present in the art world. Through events, projects, and partnerships, they're changing the arts sector to include disabled artists at every level.

What is Künstlerdorf Schöppingen?¶

Künstlerdorf Schöppingen was founded in 1989. It is a place for art and culture. Künstlerdorf is dedicated to supporting international artists by organising a residency programme. Artists who write, create visual art, or compose music can come here with a stipend to work.

Overview of art forms:
Literature refers to the writing of texts, poems, or stories.
Visual art is painting, photography, and other pictorial forms.
Composition describes the invention and creation of music.

Location and buildings:
The residency site is located in the Münsterland region, near the Dutch border. It is housed in two converted farms with several buildings.

Fellowships and residencies:
Each year, about 40 artists receive a fellowship. A fellowship is money to support your work. You do not have to pay it back. A group of art experts chooses who gets one. A scholarship covers a stay of 2 to 6 months. Up to 15 artists live and work there at the same time. The program is open to applicants from all over the world. There is no age limit.

What is the Mission

The Künstlerdorf is a place where people meet, talk, work, and learn together. People from different artistic disciplines meet here. They exchange ideas, develop concepts, and learn from each other. This gives rise to new ideas and opportunities for recreation. These have an impact on each individual, on the Künstlerdorf itself, and on society.
