Akasha - Even an Opera Could Happen in this Space Lab
In 2021, the Space Lab became the setting for Akasha, an opera developed during composer and sound artist Wingel Pérez Mendoza’s six-month fellowship. Working with sound as a material that extends beyond the audible, Mendoza explores its relationships with images, memories, light, movement and physical space, creating new ways of experiencing and perceiving sound.
Akasha unfolds through five interactive compositions and ensembles inspired by the five essential elements: fire, water, earth, wind and spirit. Each element exists independently while transforming through its encounter with the others, creating a shifting landscape of sonic and performative relationships.
The production brought together Wingel Pérez Mendoza, dramaturg Jim Igor Kallenberg, librettist Michael Zwenzner and Camilo Pachón, who contributed the masks and stage design, alongside musicians Chie Nagai, Siniša Ljuboević, Marie Humburger and Ruben Mattia Santorsa. On December 4, 2021, the opera was performed in the gallery of küntler*dorf, transforming the space into an environment where sound, performance and scenography converged.
Akasha reveals the potential of the Space Lab as more than a physical setting. It is an environment that can be reimagined through artistic practice, allowing each project to generate its own spatial language and invite new forms of collective experience.
